July 15, 2024 – Economic Commentary
You are excused if you are feeling like you have a bad case of adult-onset ADD. It is hard to keep focused at the moment. However, this is precisely when the "dismal science" of economics can earn its keep by reminding us that there is an economy that goes about its inexorable way, a million little and big steps at a time. Yes, the US economy continues to exhibit a slowdown, but consumers and businesses both seem to be adjusting to this relatively well. Increasingly, the agility of developed economies (US, Europe, UK, Japan) and China in responding to what is clearly a post-pandemic world is being scrutinized. The early line seems to be 1) never count the US out, 2) never count the UK in, 3) always use a Gallic shrug when talking about Europe, China, or Japan, and 4) watch India closely (very closely.) At six months removed from 2025, it seems as though the tone of economic debate may be shifting, almost imperceptibly, to the question of who (country, industry, business, individual) is doing what to prepare for the second half of the decade. This is miles away from the Federal Reserve's "data-driven" preoccupation with inflation each month, but of course, it is the tactical vigilance of central bankers and the reduction of inflation pressures that are making the strategic shift to longer-term economic issues possible.
