July 1, 2024 – Economic Commentary
Any fireworks over the next few days will likely be confined to the traditional variety, not those of an economic sort. However, this is mainly because the cache of economic Roman candles has been seriously depleted after last week’s US Presidential Debate and Sunday’s French elections for the National Assembly, both of which fall into the category of geopolitical uncertainties that financial markets would prefer to avoid. Additionally, there was true celebration over a very good Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation number, with core inflation measuring out at 0.0% for May. And the week ended with a real firecracker of a Supreme Court decision, overturning what is known as the Chevron doctrine and calling into question numerous federal regulations. Even if you are a fan of reducing the power of federal agencies, it must be recognized that a wide array of industries have business plans structured around existing federal regulations, and now you must question the validity of those plans. Apparently, it’s not just Silicon Valley that embraces disruption.
There are a few cherry bombs and one or two skyrockets left, however. The FOMC minutes will have some interesting things to say about exactly how hawkish some Federal Reserve Presidents became last month, in a possibly instructive contrast to their more recent statements indicating that economic growth is moderating and excessive fears about inflation may be misplaced. And the employment numbers (for June in this case) always seem to be an analytical and verbal flashpoint. By the time we all come back from our Fourth of July travels and festivities, we will certainly have new economic numbers, a new French prime minister, and a considerably hotter US presidential race. Enjoy those high-inthe-sky fireworks this Thursday, and have a great Fourth of July.
